Dental Association Mails Malware to Members

This is breaking news…

Windows-Update-150x150The American Dental Association has snail-mailed up to 37,000 infected USB drives that contain malware that allows remote users to access their PCs.

The USB drive contains an updated CDT manual, which is used by dental offices for coding procedures, billing and insurance claims, so any PCs infected with the malware would presumably contain or have access to HIPAA and PCI data of patients.

They’ve since redistributed the updated 2016 CDT manual via a secure website, but it is unknown why they simply did not do that in the first place rather than rely upon 3rd party, Chinese-based distributers of USB devices.

From the comments:

Will be interesting to see what the fallout will be. We will hear in a few months about dental office breaches with both PCI (credit card) and HIPAA (PII) concerns.

The ADA is telling members to basically rely upon their presumed anti-virus to protect them from the security breach, but security professionals say that only some anti-virus products reliably detect the virus. They also assert that only “some” of the drives contain the malware, but don’t provide a figure.

You should destroy the USB device immediately.

Anti-Spamming Your Inbox

Anti-Spamming Your Inbox

Understanding the difference between spam and opt-in emails.

Kirkham Systems frequently receives help desk requests to cut down on spam. Understanding what spam actually is versus newsletters is helpful to understand what we can control and why.

Kirkham Systems operates under the principle that we would rather users receive a little bit more “spam” in order to prevent false positives for emails you may want – indeed – need to receive.

Spam is loosely defined as unsolicited emails. These are typically the business loans, Viagra, and other emails you receive that you have not signed up for, nor do you have a previous business relationship with the vendor. These are the ones we hope to eliminate or at least greatly reduce.

Newsletters are emails that you have either signed up for and/or have a business relationship with the vendor. Maybe you have purchased something from say, amazon.com. Since you provided your email address, by default your email address is added to their email list, so you will receive emails from them from time to time. If you have joined discussion forums, sometimes those send weekly or daily updates as well. We do NOT try to trap these emails in our spam filters, because these emails are considered “legitimate” since you have voluntarily entered into a business relationship with them.

So, what do you do? I go on an “unsubscribe” venture about twice a year, and spend a week or two unsubscribing from legitimate emails. Taking the time to go to the bottom of the email and clicking unsubscribe from these eliminates much of my unwanted emails.

The true spammers have harvested emails (which contained yours) from various underground lists. There is not much you can do about those. Even clicking unsubscribe on them will at best unsubscribe you, but usually it really does not help. It doesn’t hurt, though.

Occasionally for a few days or weeks, you may receive an abundance of spam messages. In these cases, the spammers have figured out a way to get past the spam filters, and it takes a while to redo the algorithms. You just have to wait it out. Trying to tweak these too quickly can create false positives, and suddenly you may not receive emails from legitimate senders, which is the last thing we want to do.

You will be surprised what a few days of unsubscribing will do in cleaning up your inbox and increasing your productivity!
